For years, leadership was associated with having the answers. The most experienced person in the room was expected to provide direction, make decisions and know what to do next. Whether that was ever entirely true is debatable. Today, it's almost impossible.

Modern organisations are simply too complex. Technology, AI, regulation, governance, customer expectations and the pace of change mean no single person can be the expert in everything.

The best leaders understand that their value doesn't come from knowing the most. It comes from asking better questions, listening to expertise and creating the conditions for better thinking. They challenge assumptions, encourage different perspectives and use judgement to reach stronger decisions.

Perhaps the greatest myth in leadership is that authority and expertise are always found in the same person. Great leaders don't compete with the expertise around them. They unlock it.
