SITREP #021

The Story Became More Important Than The Truth.

STATUS : Distorted

LOCATION : Leadership

RISK : High

The narrative created expectations that reality could no longer support.

Storytelling is one of leadership's most powerful tools. It creates belief, builds momentum and helps people understand where an organisation is heading. The danger comes when the story gradually becomes detached from reality.

I've observed organisations where every initiative became a success, every announcement reinforced progress and every challenge was quickly reframed into a positive. Over time, a relatively small group became increasingly vocal in reinforcing the narrative, whilst the majority quietly disengaged from it. Their lived experience no longer reflected the organisation being described, so many simply stopped contributing altogether.

People don't lose trust because leaders tell positive stories. They lose trust when those stories no longer reflect reality. The strongest organisations celebrate genuine progress whilst remaining honest about the work still to be done. Every story deserves an occasional reality check.
