Independent investigations exist for a reason. They establish the facts, assess the evidence and reach objective conclusions based on what can be substantiated, not what is convenient.

From time to time, investigations conclude where the evidence itself isn't disputed. The interviews are accepted. The documents are accepted. The chronology is accepted. The findings are not.

Not because new evidence has emerged, but because the conclusions carry uncomfortable implications for individuals, relationships or senior leaders. The moment findings become negotiable, independence erode and investigations stop being a search for the truth, and become a search for an acceptable outcome.

The purpose of an investigation isn't to produce findings that people like. It's to produce findings that the evidence supports.
