SITREP #014

Engagement Scores Improved Dramatically. The Pay Review Had Just Landed.

STATUS : Predictable

LOCATION : Engagement

RISK : Moderate

Sometimes the survey measures the timing, not the culture.

Employee engagement survey illustrating how pay reviews, rewards and recent organisational events can significantly influence engagement survey results.

Engagement surveys provide valuable insight, the challenge is that they rarely measure culture in isolation.

Engagement scores tend to improve dramatically immediately after pay reviews, bonus payments, annual awards or other positive announcements. Equally, that feel good sentiment often declines once the annual pay review cycle has passed, bonuses have been spent and attention shifts back to day-to-day frustrations.

Neither result is necessarily wrong, they simply reflect how people felt at that moment in time. The risk comes when organisations treat a single survey as an absolute measure of culture rather than a snapshot in time, influenced by recent events.

In an ideal world, organisations would capture engagement feedback continuously, allowing trends to emerge over time rather than relying on a single annual snapshot.
