SITREP #013
The Leader Became The Bottleneck. The Team Became The Queue.
STATUS : Normalised
LOCATION : Leadership Teams
RISK : High
Decisions were waiting. So was the organisation.
I've seen this happen for two very different reasons.
The first is growth, when a founder or leader builds a successful organisation by making every important decision themselves. What worked brilliantly for ten people often becomes the constraint at one hundred. Decisions accumulate faster than one person can make them and progress falters as a result.
The second is micromanagement, where authority exists but trust doesn't. Decisions that capable people could make are repeatedly escalated upwards for review and approval.
The cause may be different, the outcome is the same. Talented and capable people spend more time waiting than delivering. Momentum is lost, frustration grows and the organisation becomes increasingly dependent on and constrained by one person.
The strongest leaders don't measure their value by the number of decisions they make. They measure it by the number of good decisions their team can make without them.
