SITREP #003

We’re Like A Family

STATUS : Common

LOCATION : Culture

RISK : Moderate

The phrase is usually well intentioned, the expectations it creates rarely are.

Workplace communication board featuring a "we're like a family" message, illustrating organisational culture and employee engagement.

Whenever I hear "we're like a family", I become slightly cautious. Families are built on the premise of unconditional love. Workplaces are built on the premise of mutual benefit.

That's not a criticism, it's simply reality. People don't need their employer to be family. They need purpose, clarity, career development, recognition and to be treated fairly. Ideally, by leaders who genuinely care about their wellbeing.

The strongest organisations I've seen don't try to become families. They focus on creating environments where people can do their best work and feel valued whilst doing it.

That's more sustainable than pretending to be something they're not.
